How to Apply
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Here’s what you will need:
- Bachelor's degree transcripts from a regionally accredited college or university
- B average in undergraduate coursework (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
1) Submit Your Online Admission Application & Application Fee
Please visit https://admissions.cgu.edu/apply/ to begin and submit your application including an
$80 application fee (for a limited time the app fee is waived).
Application fee waivers may be available. Please reach out to your enrollment advisor for more information.
2) Prepare and Upload…
Your resume (or curriculum vitae) should list your relevant work experience, internships, research, awards, and/or publications, as well as educational history. Your résumé can be uploaded on the Supplemental Items Listing page.
Your Statement of Purpose is a very important part of your application. It should be a well-written and carefully crafted paper of approximately 2-3 pages in length. You should describe in detail:
- Personal and career goals
- Relevant employment experience and achievements
- Reason for wanting to study your program at Claremont Graduate University
- Specific areas of interest within your desired field of study
- Why you are a strong candidate for graduate studies at CGU
Be sure to include a header or footer with your name on every page of your Statement of Purpose.
Recommenders will evaluate a candidate based on academic performance, motivation for program of study, intellectual capacity and/or research and writing ability. It is recommended that references acquainted with applicant’s potential for success should submit a written recommendation on your behalf.
In most academic departments, references from faculty members who can speak to the applicant’s academic ability are preferred; applicants with substantial work experience may request professional references. Family members or friends as references are not acceptable. Please have on hand: name, title, professional email address, phone number and relationship of your recommenders.
Applicants can enter details about each recommenders and indicate whether or not they will be submitting recommendations online. Those who will be submitting their recommendations online will receive an email unique to the applicant’s application containing instructions on how to submit their recommendations. Recommenders can also mail in their letters of recommendations by completing the recommendation form, which applicant can email them. The recommendation form can be downloaded from the application. Recommenders can also email their letter of recommendation to the Office of Admissions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you suspect that any portion of your application package may present an area of concern (i.e. poor grades), or if you would like to offer more information to the faculty regarding a unique situation (i.e. a large gap in your resume), then you should consider submitting an optional statement.
You will need to complete the academic history section in your online application. Transcripts for your completed bachelor and post-bachelor institutions (if applicable) should be entered, and must be received prior to going to review. Important notes:
Unofficial copies of transcripts can be uploaded to your application for initial review as PDF files. Upload one PDF transcript for each school that you have attended. While unofficial transcripts can be used to submit an application for review, official transcripts must be sent and received by a university representative in order to enroll in the program.

GRE/GMAT scores are required to apply to the Master of Science in Evaluation and Applied Research. All scores must be sent directly to CGU by the testing agency. Scores more than five years old do not meet CGU application requirements. Testing information is available from a variety of resources.

TOEFL/IELTS. TOEFL or IELTS scores are required of all non-native English speaking applicants. The examination is not required for the following applicants:
- Citizens or permanent residents of countries where English is the sole official language of instruction. e.g., Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada (except Quebec), England, Ghana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad, Tobago, Uganda, and Wales (see the CGU Bulletin for a complete list of accepted countries).
- Applicants who hold an undergraduate or advanced degree, or will not have earned such a degree prior to enrolling at CGU, from an institution in the US or in countries where English is the sole official language of instruction (see above).
- Applicants who have successfully completed an academic English pre-master’s or intensive graduate bridge program from a nationally recognized, regionally accredited four-year college or university in the United States in the last two years, with submitted evidence of successful completion, and subject to curriculum approval by the CGU Center for Writing & Rhetoric.
TOEFL or IELTS scores must be sent to CGU directly by the testing agency. Self-reported scores are not accepted. Scores older than two years are also not accepted. CGU’s school code for the TOEFL exam is 4053.
A minimum TOEFL score of 95 iBT, or a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 with no sub-score lower than 6.5, is required for admission.

These guidelines are being provided to address the common issues and questions faced by international applicants.
Submitting Official Documents
To be considered "official" your transcripts must remain sealed as they were by the issuing university. If your university does not seal their transcripts as a standard procedure, please request that they place your transcripts in a sealed university envelope and stamp the outside flap with their school seal. Forward these documents directly to CGU as-is; please do not open the envelope as this will void the transcripts.
Translating Official Transcripts
Transcripts that are not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation. Many schools will be able to accommodate your request to have your transcripts issued in English. If your school is unable to issue official transcripts in English, you have a few options:
You may take your transcripts and diploma/proof of degree to the appropriate verifying institution (i.e. Educational Ministry) to have them translated and notarized. The institution can then send those documents directly to us in a sealed, preferably signed envelope. If the institution will only release the verification to you, please request that they put it in a sealed envelope so that you can forward that envelope directly to us; Do not open the envelope as that will void the verification. The documents must be received in their original sealed envelope to be considered official.
You can submit your transcripts to a translation service. The translation service can then send those documents directly to us in a sealed, preferably signed envelope. If they send the translation to you, it must be forwarded to us in its original sealed state. Again, DO NOT open the envelope as that will void the translation; the documents must be sealed to be considered official. You should also request that an official copy (in your native language) be sent from your university to us so that we can compare the original to the translation.
Supplementary Degree Verifications
CGU requires that official transcripts showing that a degree was conferred be submitted for each institution. If your school is unable to issue official transcripts showing that a degree was conferred to us directly, you may follow one of the options below to ensure that your documents satisfy the transcript requirement:
(Preferred) You can ask your school to issue an official degree verification to you along with your official transcripts. Remember, documents must be received in sealed envelopes to be considered official. If your school will only release the verification to you, please request that they put it in a sealed envelope and stamp the outside flap with their school seal. You can then forward the envelope directly to us; do not open the item as that will void the verification. This official degree verification will be evaluated in combination with your official transcripts.
You may take your transcripts and diploma/proof of degree to the appropriate verifying institution (i.e. Educational Ministry) to have them notarized. The institution can then provide you with those documents or send those documents directly to us in a sealed, preferably signed envelope. Again, the documents must be sealed to be considered official. Do not open the envelope as that will void the verification. If your country's notary public offices are granted authority by the educational ministry to authenticate transcripts, you may take them there; if not, notarized copies will not be accepted.
If no additional documentation is available through the school, and you are not able to have your documents notarized, you may wish to submit your transcripts for evaluation through an accreditation service such as Worldwide Educational Service (wes.org) or International Education Research Foundation (ierf.org/) and request that the evaluation report be sent to Claremont Graduate University.
If you have not completed your bachelor's degree (or master's degree if applicable) at the time you apply to CGU, please request transcripts from your university showing the work you have completed to date. These are called IN PROGRESS transcripts and will be marked as NDI (which simply means No Degree Indicated). These documents are acceptable for admissions evaluating purposes and an admissions decision will be rendered.
Please note that you will receive communication from the Office of Admissions & Records indicating that your transcript requirement has not yet been satisfied (you will see the letters NDI next to the name of your school). Please feel free to ignore these courtesy messages. Once you complete degree, you will need to submit official transcripts showing that the degree has been granted/conferred/completed in the manners described above.
